Summary: The study is based on the analysis of legal documents, historical and political narratives, oral testimonies, documented data, audio and video materials, and media publications. The article analyzes the crimes committed by Russian troops in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine after the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. It is proved that Russia's crimes in Ukraine should be interpreted as acts of genocide against Ukrainians. The authors provide a historical overview, reveals the legal component, presents the main features and differences between the crimes of genocide and war crimes, and provides evidence of the intent and direct commission of acts of genocide against Ukrainians by Russia. The monograph includes field and illustrative materials that highlight various aspects of the people’s interpretation of the value of human existence. The main group of source materials consists of the results of the authors' empirical research, including those collected during historical, ethnographic and archaeological expeditions; the testimonies of respondents with the preservation of direct speech and dialect features; a questionnaire for collecting and recording key evidence to clarify the issue at hand; photographs, drawings, and drawings, as well as illustrations from museum and archival collections that illustrate the essence and versatility of the concept of the value of human existence and its manifestations in various areas of Ukrainian folk culture.
