Summary: The book contains a story about the unknown Oleksandr Dovzhenko (1894—1956). A participant in the struggle for independent Ukraine, later a member of the «Borotbists» party, and then a diplomat, artist, writer and film director with a world name, he found himself under the close supervision of the communist special services for many years. They recorded his every step, his mood, his plans, his activities, and there were many informants in his inner circle. In the work on the book, the author-compiler used unique documents and materials from the form case, as well as other archival sources. Their analysis allows us to see a completely different Oleksandr Dovzhenko. Forced to create a communist film canon, he was at the same time a non-conformist, giving realistic and ruthless assessments of the ruling order of the time.

Reading audience: The publication is intended for a wide range of readers.
