Summary: This book has based on the results of further in-depth study of world experience regarding methodological recommendations for identification, inventory, mapping habitat diversity and habitat protection within a certain region or country. In the second edition, considerable attention is paid to the analysis of modern methods practiced in European countries, primarily in relation to habitats that do not have permanent vegetation. The basic principles of practical methods were worked out within the project «Introduction of European Standards and Methods for Habitat Identification and Classification in Ukraine. A pilot project in the Ukrainian Carpathians». Therefore, most methodological aspects are considered in the example of the Ukrainian Carpathians. At the same time, the proposed methodological approaches are universal and had been used by the authors during the implementation of a number of researches on the territories of Polissia, Volyno-Podillia and other regions. They can be applied to the entire territory of Ukraine. A brief outline of the main aspects and problems of implementing habitat approaches to biodiversity conservation in Ukraine is also provided.
