Summary: The catalogue of spiders of the Lviv oblast is based on literature-derived data, starting from 1867, as well as information on specimens and inventories of collections which has not been previously published. The history of araneology development in the region is analysed; special attention is paid to the period of formation of this science during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Biographies of scientists, who published materials on the fauna and ecology of spiders or participated in the collection and preservation of specimens from the oblast during the period 1867—1991, are presented. The annotated checklist of spiders comprises 545 species belonging to 231 genera and 34 families. It lists all synonymous, homonymous, misspelled names of taxa, nomina dubia, and nomina nuda that are found in the literature, on the labels, or in descriptions of relevant araneological collections. Information on the distribution of species within the Lviv oblast is given in accordance with its current administrative division. The list of known localities is created, and their coordinates and belonging to the physiographic region are established. The state of the study of spider fauna in the oblast is analysed.
