Summary: In this monograph we review and synthesize current knowledge and our own original studies on the role of the phytohormonal system in regulating plant growth and development under heavy metal exposure. We review the sources and toxicity of various heavy metals. We present the current understanding of biosynthesis, metabolism, transport and signaling of auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic and salicylic acids, jasmonates, and brassinosteroids, and their interactions and crosstalk. We discuss examples where priming and foliar treatment with exogenous hormones are protective in the presence of heavy metal stress conditions.
