Summary: The scientific methods of obtaining graphite intercalation compounds and expanded graphite by oxidation and thermal processing of natural graphite are considered in this work. The results of investigations of structural features of GIC-H2SO4, and EG are presented here. The main methods of creation the solid material from the EG powder, its physical, chemical and electrical properties, and areas of use are reviewed. The physical-chemical basis of the formation of EG-carbon and polymer-EG nanocomposite materials, results of microstructure research and its relation with physical, mechanical and electrical characteristics under conditions of local distribution and continuous network formation are outlined. The possible ways of practical application of obtained materials are also proposed here.
