Summary: Christmas carols and shchedrivkas constitute unique legacy of Ukrainians and date back to more than two hundred years ago. This legacy represents national loci as well as the ethnic territories thatgo beyond the current state border of Ukraine — Kholmshchyna, Pidliashshia, Beresteyshchyna, Lemkivshchyna, Priashivshchyna, Kuban. These lauditive songs glorify the Ukrainian family — head of household, his wife, boy, girl. Of high value are Christmas carols and shchedrivkas for children. The visual ceremonies with the «Nanny Goat», «Malanka» are bright examples of carnivals in the New Year celebrations. Christian values constitute the basis for a huge cultural layer in religious Christmas carols. Attention focuses for the first time on social and political vectors of Christmas carols and shchedrivkas — those of Sichovi Striltsi, insurgents, as well as modern samples about Russian-Ukrainian war in the east of Ukraine. The collection includes 1,291 texts, 550 of which are accompanied by melodies. The annexes include valuable information about the sources, folklore collectors, informers, and geography of records.
Reading audience: For folklore researchers, man of letters, linguists, ethnologists, culture researchers, music connoisseurs, and all those appreciating Ukrainian folk culture.
