Summary: The monograph presents data from the current scientific literature and the results of our own comprehensive studies on the biochemical pathways of NO synthesis in the mitochondria of uterine smooth muscle cells. Special attention is paid to the molecular mechanisms of nitric oxide action as a possible endogenous specific regulator of Ca2+ concentration in myocytes, functioning of Ca2+ transport systems of mitochondria and bioenergetic processes in them. Experimental data on the effect of calix[4]arenes, exogenous non-toxic modulators of mitochondrial functional activity, on NO synthase capacity, bioenergetics, and Ca2+ homeo-stasis of organelles were analyzed. New answers are given to fundamental questions about the ways of smooth muscle relaxation. Provides a thorough analysis of modem data on the metabolism and physiological significance of nitric oxide. Contain mainly the author’s own experimental material on such issues as nitric oxide synthesis in uterine smooth muscle mitochondria, nitric oxide regulation of Ca2+ homeostasis hi myocytes and Ca2+ transport in the inner mitochondrial membrane, and the effect of nitric oxide on the electron transport chain: Considerable attention is paid to calix[4]arenes as a selective effectors on Ca2+ transport, NO synthesis, and energy processes in mitochondria.

Reading audience: For specialists in the field of biochemistry and biophysical chemistry, biochemical membranology and pharmacology, as well as for graduate students of the relevant specialties.
