Summary: The results of a comprehensive study of the ecological state of the system of Opechen lakes (Kyiv) in terms of a set of hydrological, hydrochemical, and hydrobiological indices are generalized in the monograph. The studied water bodies are subjected to anthropogenic load and secondary pollution by nutrients, organic substances, and metal compounds, in particular manganese and iron. They are characterized by temperature and oxygen stratification responsible for a significant decrease in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, pH and redox-potential (Eh-potential) in the near-bottom layer of water. These factors essentially influence the intensity of secondary pollution of the aquatic environment, which can be considered as an additional internal source primarily of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds capable of increasing the level of lake eutrophication. The data on the pollution of lake system by oil products are given. The results of microbiological studies of the lakes, the quantitative development of phytoplankton and phytoepiphyton in them, and the levels of accumulation of heavy metals by higher aquatic plants are considered. The data on bioassay of the aquatic environment and sediments of the studied lakes using a set of lest organisms of different taxonomic groups are also presented.
Reading audience: For hydrologists, hydrochemists, hydrobiologists, toxicologists, ecologists, and specialists in water management and environmental protection.
