Summary: The present monograph is the first attempt of a comprehensive analysis of Slavs’ funerary rite of the pre-state period on the territory of Ukraine. The materials are considered on the background of a wide range of synchronous monuments of Central and Eastern Europe. The analysis allowed reconsidering a number of problems of ethnocultural and social development of the early Slavs, to assess further changes that took place in the funeral rites of the population of Eastern Europe after the formation of a new state with its centre in Kyiv. Due to the involvement of ethnographic, folklore and other sources, the semantic meaning of the rite and its individual elements were reconstructed.
