Summary: The publication provides recommendations for samples collection, cultivation of test objects, toxicity evaluation and identification of the class of pollutants in water and bottom sediments, taking into account the characteristics of the studied environmental matrix (water, interstitial water, bottom sediments) and the purpose of the tests. The national and international experience in methods of cultivation of planktonic and benthic hydrobionts applied for biotesting, the features of different biotests applications in toxicity testing procedures are summarized. Some of the possible physicochemical manipulations with water and bottom sediment samples that can change the toxicity of the sample and the effect of which is an element of the Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedure for water and bottom sediments are described.
