Summary: The monograph analyzes and compares two archaeological complexes of the end of the 9th —11th centuries. in Nizhny Podesen. The site are identical in terms of topographical structure and chronology. This work is the result of many years of field archaeological research of Shestovytskyi and Vypovzivskyi archaeological complexes. Іn historical and archaeological science they are characterized as military trade and craft fortified settlements of the proto-city type. The book analyzes the geographical conditions of the emergence of monuments, defensive structures of hillforts, residential and economic development, and port areas. The simultaneous emergence, similarity of the socio-topographical structure and material culture of Shestovytsia and Vypovzov site, indicates the active activity of a separate category of the population, the so-called «Rus», in the military and trade campaigns of Nizhny Podesnya and the Dnieper region.
