Summary: The atlas contains information on the spatial and numerical distribution of 275 species of birds on the territory of Ukraine, for which breeding status has been confirmed in 2013—2020. The publication is based on faunistic materials collected using standard EBCC atlas methods, where for each species, within each of the atlas 50 km squares data on the status according to a three- level scale, and the size of the breeding population according to a 6-level logarithmic scale, are indicated for the entire territory of Ukraine. The field works that formed the basis of the book were carried out as a part of the international project devoted to the preparation of the second European Breeding Birds Atlas. Grid squares were considered complete if 75% of potentially breeding species in the region were found during the fieldwork. A mandatory requirement for field experts was to survey all habitats typical for a 50 km square. The main fieldwork was carried out from 2013 to 2015, and special expeditions also surveyed some atlas squares from 2016—2018. The standard atlas surveys were supplemented by additional transect bird surveys, carried out taking into account the proportional composition of habitats in squares of 50 × 50 km, namely at least on 2 routes, with a recommendation for experts to conduct up to 5 such transect surveys in April, and for the second time in May. Thus, the current edition of the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Ukraine contains information on all 100% (n = 281) atlas squares, which is twice as much as in the previous edition of the European Breeding Bird Atlas. Also, the book contains short species descriptions with information about their distribution in Europe and breeding habitats in Ukraine. Species accounts are illustrated with original illustrations.

Reading audience: The publication will be useful to zoologists, ecologists, specialists in the field of nature protection, students of natural sciences faculties, birdwatchers and everyone who is interested in birds.
