comprehensive research of national specificity of the Ukrainian folktale, which includes all varieties of these folklore narratives. It is being accentuated the theoretical understanding of national peculiarities of folktale epic in the works of Ukrainian and foreign researchers. Concentrates attention on the process of modifying plots and motives under the influence of national character and language picture of the world. In the thesis traced the implementation in folktales the ethnopsychological constants of the Ukrainians such as love to the earth, individualism, altruism, religiosity, the national ideal of family. The evolution of individual elements of folktale plots, their interaction with behind folklore factors: folk beliefs, historical, social and domestic realities are considered. The main differences of Ukrainian folktale characters compared to their embodiment in folktales of other Slavic peoples (primarily Russians and Belarusians) are found out. It is shown that an important feature of the Ukrainian folktale epic is functionally interchangeable of negative characters. It is proved that combining in character of folktale hero heroic and comic elements distinguishes the Ukrainian hero of the similar characters of other Slavic peoples. National specificity of all major types of female characters (girl, wife, grandmother, widow) in Ukrainian folktales is considered. The main alien ethnic heroes (Gypsy, Jew, Muscovite) of Ukrainian folktales, through treatment to which traits of Ukrainian national character are formed, are also analyzed. It is proved the existence in the Ukrainian folktale tradition of some semantic variants of unique permanent formula elements (moving storyteller in the real world with water or with a shotgun). Variation of traditional Slavic structural patterns, which built traditional formula elements (features of national life, ethnic place names, etc.) is also traced. In this work major artistic means (epithet, comparison) and etiquette constructions of folktales are analyzed, their genetic relationships with the outlook of the Ukrainians and ornament of song
